Annual maintenance fee for ".ro" domains from 1 March 2018
The Romanian .Ro domain registry (RoTLD) will introduce an annual registration and maintenance fee for ".ro" domain names from 1 March 2018.
The annual fee will be €6, excluding VAT, for each field, said former director of the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics Decebal Popescu, who signed the act introducing the fee on behalf of ICI.
The annual maintenance fee will be paid when the right to use the ".ro" domain name is equal to 5 years from the registration date. The former ICI Director now states that the principle of the 5-year grace period was retained as part of the decision to introduce the fee in March 2018.
"Basically, about half of the nearly 900,000 .ro domains in existence today were registered by 1 July 2012 and, as a result, their owners will be required to pay a maintenance fee. However, estimates show that only 50% of the owners of the 450,000 sites registered by 1 July 2012 will pay this fee when notified. The others - many of whom are not using the site today - will have their right to use it withdrawn if they do not pay."
